Sun Chemical earns RecyClass certification

Sun Chemical has secured RecyClass certification for its SunUno SoliCycle solvent-based nitrocellulose-alternative ink system for flexible packaging, making it among the first suppliers to achieve RecyClass certification for solvent-based NC-alternative inks and the first to offer a complete certified system combining NC-alternative inks with lamination adhesives.

The certification, secured in March 2026, covers the SunUno SoliCycle polyurethane-based ink range for flexographic and gravure printing alongside Sun Chemical's SunLam lamination adhesives, which are certified for PE flexibles recycling streams including colored PE. The combined system targets converters seeking a single-supplier recyclable flexible packaging ink and adhesive platform.

The development responds to growing scrutiny of nitrocellulose-based inks, which can negatively affect the recyclability and value of recycled plastics under European recycling protocols. Sun Chemical said its polyurethane alternative offers stability, high-quality print performance and improved recycling compatibility, with PU resin supply secured through parent company DIC and adhesive specialist Sapici, acquired in 2022.
