CCL Label, Leeds, UK, has installed its fourth Nilpeter MO-3300 offset-based combination press. Toronto-based CCL Industries through its CCL Label Division claims to be the largest printer of primary self-adhesive labels in the world. Two more identical presses are operating at CCL's Paris operation, while five – two of which are on order – are in CCL plants in the USA and two in the Far East.

The press in Leeds is configured with eight interchangeable offset/UV-flexo/rotary screen stations. It is also supplied with Nilpeter's recently introduced gravure cassette module. With its laser-engraved sleeves, this module allows the company to print metallic ink rather than foil blocking, which is increasingly of interest to personal care and beverage companies. In addition to these markets, CCL is focused on supplying the household cleaning beverage, food, agro-chemical and garden product sectors. Clear or opaque filmic laminates are used for about 85 per cent of the total label output.

Stuart Lang, president of CCL Label, Europe – and based in Leeds – said: 'In Europe we have standardised our buying of film, plates, screens and inks to allow interchangeable print capacity throughout all our plants. It aligns with the growing trend towards the single-source buying of labels and packaging materials by international brand owners’.

’The four Nilpeter presses provide us with a common platform with excellent production flexibility to meet the quick turnarounds required by our customers. At another level, the need to keep total costs down is helped by the fact that offset plates cost considerably less than conventional flexo plates, while giving a superior quality image.'
