HERMA joins Licon RFID alliance
As a specialist in self-adhesive technology and supplier of smart labels, Stuttgart-based HERMA has now joined the internationally active RFID working group Licon Logistics. Licon was initiated in 2003 by Siemens Business Services and the logistics specialists Khne Nagel. Its other members now include the Fraunhofer Institute and Lufthansa Systems. Licon has set itself the goal of carrying out national and international projects within a working network in order, amongst other things, to establish the international RFID standards that will ensure the secure worldwide flow of goods in future by using the new technology.
“With HERMA, Licon is taking on one more company that can contribute comprehensive experience in relation to labeling and marking to numerous logistics projects,” said Licon manager Alexander Unruh. “HERMA’s specific know-how, which stretches from the smart label to label applicators, from technical advice and project management to the hardware integration of a complete RFID system, will make a valuable contribution to Licon.”
Heiko Tiedmann, manager of the Smart Labels Department at HERMA adds: “The realization is spreading more and more that the profitability calculations in RFID projects in many cases do not depend on the costs of individual labels. The decisive factor is in fact the unbiased consideration of the system as a whole.” For instance, with RFID technology alone it is possible to reduce costs permanently that would otherwise be caused by wrong identification, mix-ups, rework, or manual handling.
“RFID systems gain even more in attractiveness if they enable expensive and time-consuming ‘island-solutions’ to be avoided in any given technology,” says Tiedmann. “Licon has developed just in this short time into a major catalyst for creating the right conditions.”
One example that he mentions is the first intercontinental RFID project that has just been initiated under the aegis of Licon, and under which the wireless technology will be tested all along the supply chain between Munich and New York under real-life conditions.
