IHMA announces hologram award winners

A new holographic security film on polycarbonate (PC) has scooped the prize for the ‘Best Applied Security Product’ at the International Hologram Manufacturers Association’s (IHMA) Excellence in Holography Awards 2009.

Optical solutions provider JDSU won the award at a presentation made at the conference dinner of the annual holography conference Holopack•Holo-print in Budapest, Hungary in November for its Holofuse system.

The awards recognize outstanding industry achievement and are presented to organizations who have introduced the most innovative or commercially viable hologram product or technique over the year.

Holofuse is a laminate layer for PC ID cards, so it requires no additional card manufacturing stage, and the material bonds at the molecular level. It thwarts ID and passport counterfeiters because the holographic layer is integral and cannot be removed from the rest of the card.

Commended in the same category for its outstanding work was Holostik India for it effective anti-counterfeiting hologram for healthcare products company Vanali, which uses the technology on its herbal oils’ range (pictured).

Holostik was also the winner in the ‘Innovation in Holographic Production and OEM Product’ category, this time for its technique for using low optical density (OD) metalizing on holographic embossing without touching the sealing side of PVC. This enables blister packs to be produced primarily for pharmaceutical applications with the hologram on the blister side.

Presenting the awards, outgoing IHMA chairman Philip Hudson said: ‘This year we have again seen some fantastic entries from international producers, reflecting the breadth and depth of the global holographic industry.

‘Innovation and quality were again to the fore and congratulations to the winners for their outstanding contribution to pushing forward the holographic boundaries over the past year.’
