Growth of counterfeiting and product piracy worldwide is now estimated to be running at around 20 per cent annually, while product tampering is growing at about 13 per cent.
These figures are contained in a new techno-economic report published by the Vandagraf International consultancy group in association with the Product & Image Security Foundation. The 300 plus page report reviews and evaluates opportunities for manufacturers of brand protection solutions across a number of selected end-user sectors.
With the globalisation of markets, manufacturing and supply chains greatly facilitating the environment for counterfeiting and product piracy, the report highlights numerous additional factors that combine to create windows of opportunity for product related crimes.

Best estimates for the total value of the market for brand protection solutions has been put at around US$ 7 billion in 2002. This is equivalent to only around 1 per cent of the estimated US$ 700 billion annual worldwide losses from product related crime. The worldwide market for brand protection solutions is forecast to more than double over the five year period from 2002 to over US$ 15 billion in 2007.

In the course of this study the greatest opportunities for brand protection solutions have been identified in the pharmaceutical sector where counterfeiting has reached epidemic proportions in certain regions around the World.
Excellent opportunities for brand protection solutions are also seen in Garments, Sportswear and Footwear, Home Entertainment Industry (Audio / Visual products and Interactive Video Games), PC Software. Good opportunities are also seen in Personal Computers (PCs) related Consumables (cartridges, toners), Drinks & food products, Batteries & Shaving products, Toiletries, Cosmetics, Health & Beauty products (Fragrances & Perfumes).

In addition to the product categories listed above, there are examples of product related crime across a huge spectrum of product types, many of which are addressed in the report.
