The Phoenix Challenge Foundation has announced its 2011 College Competition Program. It has been scheduled for April 30, just prior to and during the FFTA Forum and Info*Flex taking place May 1-4 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The Phoenix College Challenge is an intensive graphic arts competition designed to expose students to a high-level of execution and presentation. The team competition is comprised of two- and four-year college students located throughout the US and Canada. Sixty college students will make up nine teams and will compete by participating and solving a 'real-life' business, flexo printing situation.

This year's objective is to act as a marketing team and print vendor to create custom branding and complete promotional graphic theme for a non-profit event, the 2011 Annual Phoenix Challenge Foundation Golf Tournament. This includes the sales pitch for a custom concept and graphic imagery using narrow web produced labels, promotional golf-related items and overall event packaging. Each team will have completed the following before arriving at the competition:

  • Develop two to four sample concepts with package and label designs – must use the PCF logo artwork creatively
  • Design, develop and print labels and packaging using flexo process and workflow
  • Develop a presentation and proposal to be presented to the judges as their 'sales pitch'. This includes incorporating the physical print samples and package mock-ups

A judging panel made up of seven industry professionals will review each presentation and the printed work, then score each team for final winners of the competition. The top awards will be announced during the Awards Banquet Sunday, May 1 at the FFTA Forum. The winning team members receive a contest trophy for combined total score. Other winners receive trophies for achievement in individual categories such as marketing, concept, design, etc.

‘The Phoenix Challenge College Competition continues to grow with an increase in student participation again this year. It is exciting to support students from so many colleges and universities with a focused program on their prime area of career interest,’ said Bettlylyn Krafft, chairman of the Phoenix Challenge Foundation. ‘As a non-profit organization, the competition is crucial to our industry and relies on money raised by industry influencers who also believe in building tomorrow's flexo workforce.’
