Italian coffee company turns to compostable packaging for new organic brand

Based in Modena, Caffè Molinari has introduced espresso and decaffinated varieties of Bio in compostable packaging. The coffee packs are manufactured in a two-layer construction comprising a white metallized high barrier NatureFlex outer layer laminated to a bio-polymer sealant inner layer, providing high seal strength and integrity.

Working in collaboration with converter Goglio, Innovia Films developed the packs specifically for Caffè Molinari.

Attilio Cecchi, area sales manager for Italy at Innovia Films, said: ‘NatureFlex films are ideal for the coffee market as they fit well with concerns about sustainability and renewability. The environment continues to be a high priority in packaging and certified organic coffee products are a good fit with more sustainable options.

‘Innovia Films’ new high performance white metallized NatureFlex film is ideal for this application as it is based not only on renewable resources but also has excellent barrier properties, which is essential for keeping coffee in perfect condition.’

The packs also feature an aroma protecting bio valve, designed and patented by Goglio Plastic Division, and the full pack construction with the valve complies with the EN13432 industrial composting norm and is certified to OK Compost’s composting standard by Vinçotte. Further, the Bio packs feature a call to action for Italian consumers to recycle the packaging.

Giuseppe Molinari, Caffè Molinari managing dirtector, said: ‘In order to satisfy our customers, who care for their environment and are health conscious, we have launched two Bio coffees in fully certified compostable packs.

‘Working closely with Innovia Films and Goglio we have been able to launch this integrated coffee packaging system with a bio degassing valve into the market. So far we have had an excellent response from our customers.’
