Mica Corporation has launched its R-2462 coating, which allows converters to achieve oxygen barrier properties on films and papers that will extend the shelf life of products and contribute to source reduction. Suitable applications include food packaging where the contents can be spoiled by oxygen including dry, refrigerated and frozen packages.

When applied, oxygen barrier properties of less than 1cc/1002in/day can be achieved on BOPP film. On paper the R-2462 water-based coating has been shown to be a barrier to some greases and oils.

‘The key to achieving a good barrier is assuring that the coating is uniform and free of voids,’ commented Bruce Foster, technical sales manager, Mica Corporation.
Pre-priming the film with Mica’s A-131-X enables converters to experience optimal uniformity and adhesion properties and it can be applied with most coating methods. R-2462 achieves a good oxygen barrier with a relatively thin coating.
