Marschall installs FA-4* as digital alternative

German converter Marschall has invested in a 420mm-wide (16.5in-wide) Nilpeter FA-4* 6-color flexo printing press.

The company employs 20 people and produces labels for technical applications in run lengths from 10,000 to 250,000, and its managing director Friedel Sellmann said the FA-4* is a ‘real alternative’ to digital printing when it comes to short runs of repeat orders. On the Nilpeter FA-4* up to 95 percent of all settings can be performed automatically if the initial job has been set up accurately, while a short web path minimizes waste – an important factor given the high value substrates converted. ‘We use self-adhesive materials for special applications that may cost 15 EUR or more per square meter,’ according to Sellmann.

On the company’s older flexo machines, make-ready waste for a 4-color job is 600-800 meters, while the new Nilpeter press prints saleable quality after 80 meters.

The fully UV-equipped press also has a hot air drying system on the first print unit for thermal labels printed with special aqueous inks that offer high resistance against smearing when subsequently processed in thermal printers.
