GLP-1 label fights counterfeiting

Schreiner MediPharm has developed a new multifunctional label for pens and autoinjectors that combines analog and digital security features to help pharmaceutical manufacturers protect GLP-1 drugs against counterfeiting.

High demand for GLP-1 drugs to treat Type 2 diabetes and obesity makes them an increasingly attractive target for counterfeiters, while requirements for safe and user-friendly pens and autoinjectors continue to grow. The label is designed to help manufacturers strengthen product and patient safety along the supply chain.

The label integrates analog and digital features for multi-level authentication. Overt features such as ShiftSecure, which shows a positive-negative effect depending on the viewing angle, can be checked by visual inspection. They are complemented by semi-covert features such as microtext and InfraredSecure, and by digital functions including covert smartphone-readable printed codes and integrated NFC technology. Together they allow authentication by stakeholders from the pharmaceutical manufacturer to the patient. The digital features can also be used for geo-tracking to improve detection and tracking of counterfeiting and gray market activities.

An irreversible first-opening indication feature is central to tamper detection. Because the label covers part of the pen cap, any opening attempt becomes permanently visible, and this evidence can optionally be delivered digitally via NFC and a smartphone. The design prevents undetected recapping and illegal reuse of the label, and its construction protects product information against abrasion. If someone attempts to remove the label, parts of the printed layer remain, so the pen cannot be reused illegally.

The label also improves usability. Its extended area provides more space for product information, larger fonts and customized design, while the NFC chip enables digital services and interactive user support. It is tailored to each customer's requirements and adds functions to existing pen and autoinjector platforms.

Scalable production capacity at Schreiner MediPharm and easy integration into high-speed labeling processes are intended to help manufacturers maintain reliable supply if demand grows.
