Benson launches microwaveable packaging range

Benson Group, a leading UK manufacturer of printed cardboard packaging, has formally launched a full range of microwave cooking options, as first shown at the 2014 London leg of Packaging Innovations.

The microwave pack product range now offered by Benson Group includes DesignerWare, MicroFlex-Q, Quilt Wave, Qwik Crisp, Focus Inset Carton and MicroRite

The microwave pack product range now offered by Benson Group includes DesignerWare, MicroFlex-Q, Quilt Wave, Qwik Crisp, Focus Inset Carton and MicroRite.

DesignerWare combines paperboard and plastic for barrier protection properties, and can be printed to maximize graphics and text areas. It is available in a range of profile shapes and sizes. MicroFlex-Q is a flexible packaging film for browning and crisping food products, and can be used in carton formats via patch application. MicroFlex-Q is also printable, and is both moisture- and grease-resistant.

Quilt Wave is a microwave technology designed to be used with irregularly shaped food products, and has been engineered with cells known as ‘quilts’ that expand when exposed to microwaves, driving away moisture and allowing maximum browning and crisping.

Qwik Crisp works using unique susceptor patterns designed to unique specifications, and can be modified on a bespoke basis depending on the product. It can be used in a number of formats including cartons and trays and is said to be ideally suited to applications where browning and crisping of dough-based products, such as bread and pizza, is required.

Focus Inset Carton is a traditional folding carton that includes a microwave susceptor pattern that is applied during the manufacturing process. As such, Focus Inset Carton eliminates the need for secondary packaging elements and provides the capability to brown and crisp food.

MicroRite also utilizes susceptor technology and manages the microwave energy during the cooking process, which reduces loss of moisture from products. The result is described as ‘oven quality food from the microwave’.

Part of the range was demonstrated by Benson Group on its stand at Packaging Innovations in London earlier this year,, with bacon roll snacks being prepared for show attendees.

Benson Group said the availability of the microwaveable range is part of a ‘significant collaboration’ with parent company Graphic Packaging International, which is providing access to its range of proprietary microwave technology. Graphic Packaging International group marketing director Dr Helene Roberts said: ‘Graphic Packaging is a worldwide leader in enhanced microwave packaging, with a range of solutions that can be customised to meet individual customers’ requirements.

‘The microwave cooking solutions now available to Benson Group are products already commercially available in the US and combine a number of market-leading technologies. This includes the use of materials that have the ability to focus microwave energy exactly where it’s needed in order to deliver consistent, even heating, steaming or browning and crisping of food.’

Roberts added: ‘Our team is looking forward to discussing the benefits of each of these solutions and how they can help improve the eating quality of products in a convenient format. We are delighted to bring this ground breaking suite of solutions to the UK market, and envisage interest from both existing and new Benson Group customers.’
