Fresnels develops color change foil technology

Fresnels, Inc has developed new optically variable foil (OVF) nanotechnology, intended to improve the visual appeal of branded packaging concepts and produce eye-catching carton designs.

The ‘Peacock’ stamping foil has been ‘inspired by the iridescence found in nature’, according to Fresnels, to deliver a palette of colors and contemporary effects that can be applied by brand owners, printers and converters using standard foil application techniques.

A choice of metallized or transparent foils are available to suit a wide range of commercial packaging applications, which are supplied in different orientations to allow an array of colors to be combined and applied for additional visual impact.

Fresnels said ‘Peacock’ foils can be applied without the requirement for registration equipment.

Nanotechnology, claimed to be easier to see and apply than traditional security inks, reflects the naturally occurring color variations seen in a peacock’s tail feathers, from iridescent greens to bright gold. The advanced color change features captured in designs using ‘Peacock’ foils are difficult to replicate and can therefore be adopted for use as an added-value, cost effective foil-based anti-counterfeiting device for ID documents.

Foils can also be used to produce pairs of highly saturated iridescent colors, replicating the visual signals of bright iridescent colors that are common in other creatures, such as hummingbirds, peafowl, beetles and butterflies.
