Mr Whippy goes linerless
Doughnut maker applies linerless labels at new Sheffield plant.
Mr Whippy has installed a Ravenwood Nobac 5000 Twin Head linerless applicator at its new 15 million GBP doughnut production facility in Sheffield to label packs as output ramps up to around 1.5 million doughnuts a week.
The 23,355 sq ft site in southeast Sheffield bakes doughnuts on site before they are cooled, decorated and placed in trays. The applicator then puts D-Wrap linerless labels on 2-pack, 4-pack and 6-pack formats at the end of the automated line, and production is expected to reach around 78 million doughnuts a year. The Twin Head configuration holds two label rolls, which keeps production moving and reduces operator intervention at roll changes.
ProPrint Group, a Ravenwood-approved linerless label printer, prints the D-Wrap labels and introduced Mr Whippy to Ravenwood's technology. The investment also covers new production and packaging equipment and CO₂ refrigeration.
'Ravenwood's linerless technology has been a really important part of our new production facility. With automation at the heart of the operation, we've created a highly streamlined journey from production through to the finished pack, and the Nobac 5000 Twin Head gives us the speed and consistency we need as we scale up. We also love the fact that linerless labels eliminate the traditional backing paper, helping us reduce material use while delivering a great looking pack,' said Michael Jackson, co-founder and CEO of Mr Whippy.
