‘Green laminates’ for printed packaging

Innovia Films and Sappi Fine Paper Europe have joined forces to demonstrate potential laminate structures suitable for the food, confectionery and pharmaceutical industries.
The new products, which will be made from renewable resources, offer technical functionality, and compostability. Both companies recognise that the best end-of-life options for flexible paper/film laminates are either industrial, home composting, or anaerobic digestion that turns waste into a useful energy source.
Innovia Films offers its NatureFlex product range of renewable and compostable cellulose-based films, with tailored moisture and barrier properties, while Sappi brings expertise in flexible packaging papers and new coated and uncoated compostable paper options, such as Algro Nature and Leine Nature.
The Sappi and Innovia products have been independently tested and have received the ‘OK Compost Home’ certification by Vinçotte, and also the compostability DIN E13432 certification by DIN CERTCO.
Trials have now started with converters to show how the new laminates perform in terms of sustainability and technical packaging solutions. Tests have been carried out on both extrusion and adhesive laminate systems, targeting end users who are seeking alternatives to existing non-compostable substrates.
