Appleton has launched a new direct thermal label facestock at Labelexpo Americas 2012. Résiste 185-3.3 was developed specifically for retail weigh-scale label applications.

Key attributes include darker images and barcodes when printed with retail weigh scale equipment, as well as improved scan rates at the checkout through improved readability.

The product’s increased resistance to mechanical scuffing helps labels remain legible and scannable when in contact with PVC wrap, packaging films and bags containing plasticizers or where labeled items are stacked in cold cabinets or store shelves.‘

By applying the latest in thermal coating chemistry and technologies, Appleton can offer end users a high performing, cost-effective direct thermal product for retail weigh-scale label applications,’ said Jason Steenbock, Appleton’s label segment manager for thermal products. ‘We are driven by market insights and understanding of customer needs, and the Résiste 185-3.3 was developed in response to those needs.’

The company also told L&L it is working with a number of partners to develop the right materials to enable double sided thermal printing. ‘Two sided thermal labels are a great solution for the environment,’ said Mike Gove, strategic portfolio manager, thermal products, Appleton.

This approach could offer a different approach to removing liner waste. Gove explained: ‘Instead of throwing the liner away, it can be used as a system.’ For shipping labels, the liner can be used as an invoice or packing list once the label has been peeled and applied.

As well as reducing waste, inventory can also be cut.
