New label placing line enhances security capability

Payne Security has invested in a new label placing line at its Banbury, UK, site, which gives the company the capability to accurately place multiple security labels within its Integra overlays for passports, ID cards and other identity documents.

The investment has been driven by growing customer interest from European passport manufacturer’s in the use of multiple Optically Variable Devices (OVD’s), such as hologram labels, to enable more complex laminate and overlay solutions.  To meet this market need – and to provide the capacity for future growth of potential new applications – Payne commissioned the installation of a unique, modular, fully flexible machine to supplement the existing equipment at Banbury.

The key criterion was to allow for a significant increase in line speed whilst maintaining an enhanced degree of label placement accuracy up to /-0.5mm. The bespoke machine is designed to operate at a maximum line speed of 100 meters per minute which already goes beyond the accuracy of current label placement and provides the capability to produce overlays for up to half a million passports a day.

Intelligent technology enables the automatic verification of label position and placement accuracy via video inspection, as well as the identification of ‘good’ labels. Data generated by the machine can be used as a quality record and enhances the customer's ability to convert more readily and manage audit trails effectively for secure document components. The line is also capable of adding sequential numbers, perforating and sheeting film to meet the individual demands of the customer’s ID document production equipment.

‘The significant investment in the new label placing line makes it clear to our customers that we are committed to the development of our Integra security overlays, through the addition of multiple OVD’s in combination with other security technologies,’ commented head of marketing Simon Wildash. ‘The state-of-the-art machine delivers the accuracy and consistency essential for the requirements of the latest generation of secure identity documents.'
