Pocket-sized Unilux pixel packs portable power for printing inspection

Unilux, designer and manufacturer of industrial stroboscopic inspection systems, has introduced the Pocket Pixel, a pocket-sized, battery-powered pulsed LED light for high-speed inspection applications in printing and converting plants, claimed to double the output of ‘any other LED strobe in its class’. The Pixel uses its unique reflector design to focus 30 percent-brighter light on narrow web label presses and printing and converting applications where space is tight. It can also helps monitor the linear motion of packages and bottles and press registration.
‘LED strobes deliver the same functionality of traditional Xenon strobe but can be more effective in select applications where high flash rates are needed or longer pulse durations are acceptable,’ said Michael Simonis, president, Unilux. ‘With the reflector on our pocket-sized design, we’re able to use eight LED lamps to get enough power out of them at low flash rates and low pulse duration (under 50 micro-seconds) to be highly effective in printing and converting applications.’
‘The Pocket Pixel allows flash rates up to 50,000 flashes per minute, far beyond the limitations of a Xenon lamp and becomes brighter at higher rates where a Xenon lamp output has to be decreased,’ he continued. ‘And for larger repeat applications, the Pixel allows users to adjust a flash duration from 10 to 250 microseconds. Shorter flash durations allow for detailed inspection of barcodes and fine print by minimizing motion blur, while longer durations provide more light for larger print and repeats. Users can set the Pocket Pixel flash rate to automatically adjust proportionately to the flash rate, giving the best balance in light intensity and flash duration.’
The Pocket Pixel can run for up to two hours continuously using rechargeable NiCad batteries. The Pixel’s sustainable, eco-friendly LED lamps do not emit ozone or UV rays, have minimal disposal requirements and consume less energy in operation. LED strobes are not appropriate for every application, but Unilux says it can guide printers and converters to the correct lights for any application.
The Pocket Pixel can be used as a handheld unit or permanently mounted. Similar to the Unilux Lith-O-Light series, it provides quick and easy mounting using the optional self-contained threaded mounting bracket kit. It can be mounted on an articulating arm or a selection of swivel mounts. Mounting permits continuous use with an AC converter.
