Italian producer of liquid detergents recycles with ProLiner PP30
Saci Industrie Spa, one of the top three Italian producers of liquid detergents, has chosen UPM Raflatac’s ProLiner PP30 for some of its product labeling.
Filippo Campanile, CEO of SACI Industrie, commented, ‘We invest huge resources in packaging planning – a strategic element in the success of a detergent. The packaging must be efficient from the production and logistical points of view, and must also be forward-looking in terms of eco-compatibility. In the planning phase, material savings and process optimization are a priority.’
The polypropylene-based liner offers benefits throughout the label manufacturing process and is completely recyclable. Waste can be resold either directly to UPM through the RafCycle program or to a local recycler, as is the case with Saci.
ProLiner was introduced onto Saci’s packaging lines without any changes being made. It is 50 percent thinner than siliconized paper, which means that for the same spool diameter it holds about 20 percent more labels, with a consequent saving on storage space, transport costs and machine downtime for spool replacement. Despite being thinner, ProLiner is also stronger and dramatically reduces machine downtime related to backing failure. It has a film backing with allows a more uniform adhesive profile, increasing frontal print capacity and enhancing production. In addition, it requires less tension on-press for greater stability. When added to the ability to use a spool length of 6000 meters, this reportedly translates into a productivity increase of 10 percent.
‘We were delighted to adopt ProLiner PP30, since we have always been oriented towards sustainable packaging and environmentally sound processes. This material perfectly addresses our sustainability requirements,’ added Campanile. ‘ProLiner has also enabled us to transform a disposal cost into a source of revenue. Through UPM Raflatac Italy we came in contact with Ecoplast, a local recycler that supplies us with special containers for collecting the used ProLiner, and pays us a significant fee for every tonne of material collected since the polypropylene can be processed and turned into new products.’
