Herma expands linerless label range for logistics

Herma has expanded its linerless label portfolio with the launch of Linerless Plus, developed for logistics, dispatch and industrial applications.

The self-adhesive labels can be used with compatible desktop printers and automated print-and-apply systems. The launch complements Herma's silicone-free InNo-Liner technology, which activates the adhesive with water immediately before application.

According to Herma, the expanded portfolio enables it to meet most linerless labeling requirements in logistics and dispatch, including manually applied shipping labels and automated pallet labeling.

The launch comes as the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) begins to apply, placing greater focus on reducing packaging material and waste. Linerless labels eliminate the release liner used with conventional pressure-sensitive labels, reducing material consumption and waste generated during application.

Herma estimates that replacing 1.5 million conventional labels measuring 105 x 148.5mm with linerless alternatives could save approximately 1.37 tonnes of liner material and reduce carbon emissions by 1.42 tonnes while maintaining the same labeling output.

'There is no single linerless solution that suits every application,' said Sven Pleier, key account manager in Herma's Labels division. 'The labeling process, the technology used and the requirements placed on the label are all crucial factors. But for almost all labeling applications in logistics and dispatch, we can now offer linerless labeling with InNo-Liner and Linerless Plus.'

Linerless Plus uses a silicone release layer on the label's upper surface and a multi-layer adhesive developed by Herma. The adhesive can be applied across the label's entire surface, removing the need for the adhesive-free cutting zones commonly found in conventional linerless products.

Herma said this construction provides strong initial and final adhesion while limiting adhesive buildup around the printer's cutting mechanisms. This is intended to reduce cleaning requirements, component replacement and equipment downtime.

The full-surface adhesive also enables the labels to be applied to more challenging substrates, including rough corrugated board and plastic pallet wrap. The absence of adhesive-free zones gives users greater flexibility when specifying label widths and dimensions.

'It is now easier to order roll widths that differ from the usual standard dimensions,' Pleier added. 'This, too, can lead to both environmental and economic benefits.'

Herma is offering systems for both linerless technologies in partnership with Cab, including print-and-apply equipment for InNo-Liner and Linerless Plus and desktop printers for Linerless Plus. The new labels can also be processed on compatible linerless equipment from other manufacturers.
