World Cup winners – the final
For those of you not following the competition, where 32 nations from across the world have gone head-to-head in the quadrennial competition to find the world’s best footballing nation, and for those of you that have been keeping up-to-date with each goal and penalty save, it has been a fairly exciting tournament.
From Costa Rica finishing top of a group featuring three previous winners of the tournament – Uruguay, Italy and England – to the performances of Mexico, Chile and Colombia, which have won them a lot of fans, the action has been compelling to watch. That’s not even including the comprehensive 7-1 victory Germany recorded against host nation Brazil in their semi-final match, which also included a record-breaking goal for forward Miroslav Klose, which was his 16th in a World Cup tournament and took him passed Brazilian favourite Ronaldo.
To coincide with the knockout stages of World Cup 2014 and to find a “winner” from my World Cup packaging blog, I took my favorite 16 of the football-themed packaging examples I’d seen in the run-up to and early stages of the World Cup, and paired them to a nation that had qualified from the group stages. You can see the full draw here, but the pairings included Brazil and Pot Noodle, Argentina and Mattessons Fridge Raiders, and France with Krispy Kreme.
With Germany and Argentina making it to the final on July 13, this means the Walkers crisps multi-pack bag and limited edition Brazilian Mattessons Fridge Raiders are left to be named the “winner”.
To get this far, Walkers has overcome Babybel, Krispy Kreme and Pot Noddle, while Mattessons Fridge Raiders has triumphed against Peperami, Pepsi and Rowntree’s Randoms.
It will be an exciting game on Sunday, with Germany and Argentina sure to put on a show for the global audience that tunes into watch the World Cup final, but in terms of packaging, all of those that have appeared in this blog over the last month or so have shown a willingness to engage with consumers through packaging and capture the imagination of the buying public through focused and themed flexibles, cartons and shrink-sleeves.
However, there can only be one “winner”, so best of luck to both brands and their packaging as the first Packprint World Packaging World Cup draws to a close.
