APP completes 20m kWh solar project in China

Asia Pulp & Paper (APP) has completed the installation of a major solar panel array at the Gold HongYe mill in Suzou, China, creating one of the world’s largest rooftop solar installations.

10,000 individual solar panels have been installed on roof of the Gold HongYe Mill in Suzou, China

The installation consists of 10,000 individual panels, covering approximately 300,000 sq m or the equivalent of 42 football pitches, installed across the 12 production buildings, warehouses and administrative buildings of the mill.

It is anticipated that the solar project will produce approximately 20 million KWh of energy– enough to power 6,000 homes in the local area. Energy is to be supplied to the Chinese national grid.

Gold HongYe Paper Group is a subsidiary of APP. The company operates four papermaking mills and 16 processing plants across China and employs over 13,000 people.

Madam Zhai, deputy chief executive officer at APP China, said: ‘Investment in renewable energy in China continues apace and we are proud to be a part of growth in the sector. Our rooftops are helping to reduce the country’s carbon emissions while at the same time supplying power to the local community.’
