EAFA presents Alufoil Trophy 2017 prizes

European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA) has presented this year’s Alufoil Trophy awards, with entries across the five categories highlighting new and expanding market opportunities for aluminum foil.

Alufoil Trophy awards are presented for Consumer Convenience, Marketing and Design, Product Protection, Resource Efficiency and Technical Innovation. Judges also handed out an award for Application Innovation for the first time.

In 2017, there were 10 winners:

Consumer Convenience

  • Olio Premium (closurelogic)
  • Unshredded Wrap (Constantia Flexibles)

Marketing and Design

  • Bone-shape container with high-end printing (Constantia Flexibles)
  • Siena for Stolichnaya (Guala Closures Group)

Product Protection

  • Cakees – ready-to-eat cakes (Constantia Flexibles)

Resource Efficiency

  • Happy Day (Contital)
  • Straight'n'Easy (Huhtamaki)

Technical Innovation

  • Frangible formpack blister (Amcor Flexibles and Rohrer - Leading Solutions)
  • 3D embossing for Salute (Guala Closures Group)

Application Innovation

Guido Schmitz, director of packaging design, Consumer Health at Bayer, and leading the judging panel, said: ‘We were impressed with packs which showed real technical advances to create better sustainability, improved quality, more convenient or flexible solutions. Particularly, one or two winners offer the aluminum foil sector a real opportunity to jump into new market segments or enable customers to put their products in places they could not reach before. That marked them out as very special and it fully justified their award.’

EAFA executive director Guido Aufdemkamp added: ‘The different competition categories allow aluminum foil products made for a variety of industry sectors to demonstrate a wide range of innovations. It confirms the ‘strength in depth’ of the industry that so many excellent products were recognized again this year.’

Having received four Alufoil Trophies in this year’s competition, Constantia Flexibles CEO Alexander Baumgartner commented: ‘This shows that our focus on innovation and on further developing already existing and popular products has clearly paid off. We are especially proud to win the Application Innovation award together with our customer ABInBev, as this demonstrates that our longstanding customer relationships enable us to carry out joint projects very successfully.’
