IML helps Aldi cut mozzarella pack weight

Italian manufacturer Gruppo Francia has reduced the packaging weight of German supermarket Aldi’s private label Cucina mozzarella by half, after switching to the SuperLight pot from RPC Superfos and utilizing its suitability for in-mold labeling.

Lighter packaging and reduced carbon footprint were seen as top priorities when Aldi, responding to customer demand, asked its supplier to source a new pack. Gruppo Francia is a family-owned business specializing in mozzarella and has three factories, including one in Germany.

SuperLight is a thin wall packaging product developed by RPC Superfos, with a lightweight, yet sturdy, structure to reduce the risk of breakage. As such, it is suited for dairy products, salads and yellow fats, and an alternative to thermoforming. It is made solely from polypropylene and can be decorated using in-mold labeling.

PFC Superfos said the SuperLight pot is less than half the weight of its predecessor, meaning a significant reduction of the total cost for the packaging can be achieved, while a single-material construction makes it is easier to recycle.

Fabrizio Francia, owner of Gruppo Francia, dsaid: ‘There were two major factors in favor of SuperLight – the opportunity to have the Cucina label displayed immaculately on the pot and the reduced amount of virgin polypropylene per unit.

‘The SuperLight pot allows for substantial weight savings which leads to a more cost efficient packaging solution. Also the CO2 emissions connected to the packaging have decreased.’
