Avery Dennison unveils functional packaging innovation

Avery Dennison has launched what it is calling a first-of-its-kind heat sealable reclosure technology at Labelexpo Americas 2018.

First-ever FDA-compliant direct food contact adhesive unveiled

The new technology significantly reduces the amount of plastic packaging required and eliminates liner waste, providing an economic, sustainable solution to both converters and brand owners.

The Avery Dennison focuses on functional packaging, a fast-growing category that helps brand owners add value to products while changing the way consumers make decisions at point-of-sale.

Avery Dennison’s research, in partnership with MarketVision, will help converters better understand why consumers are demanding functional packaging, the features they look for and the premium value it adds to them.

R1490, the only FDA-compliant direct food contact adhesive, and a heat-sealable film liner turns the release liner into a functional part of the final package. The heat sealable reclosure system provides
direct adhesion of the entire construction to rigid containers, eliminating the need for flow wrapping and requiring less plastic packaging by eliminating both liner waste and clamshell lids. This significantly reduces material, particularly for produce such as tomatoes, berries or lettuce packaged in rigid plastic containers.

‘Avery Dennison’s new heat seal reclosure technology is a real win for the environment and is a great addition to our ClearIntent sustainability portfolio,’ said Heather Valentino, sustainability manager, Avery Dennison. ‘In pint containers, for example, the lid makes up 44 to 47 percent of the material used to form the container. This new heat sealable reclosure system uses significantly less material, opening up environmentally responsible opportunities for produce packers.’

The heat seal reclosure technology also provides converters a more affordable, sustainable way to provide brands with the convenient, easy peel-and-reseal functionality.

‘As the popularity of functional packaging continues to grow, our flexible packaging and reclosure portfolios demonstrate how Avery Dennison is taking the lead to further improve the consumer experience – and that drives growth for converters and their customers,’ said Frank Loncar, marketing director, Avery Dennison.

The growth of reclosure applications continues at a rapid pace in areas that include flexible packaging and thermoform formats and is transforming food packaging overall. According to Euromonitor International, approximately 190 billion retail units in the food industry will transition to flexible packaging in the next three to five years.
