APR launches recyclability assessment tool

The Association of Plastic Recyclers has launched the APR Design Assessment Tool powered by Recyda, a digital platform that automates the technical recyclability assessment of plastic packaging against the APR Design Guide for Plastics Recyclability, with early access now available to APR members and a public launch expected in late September.

The tool guides users through packaging makeup evaluation, identifying missing information, highlighting design incompatibilities, recommending recyclability improvements and assigning one of four APR Design classifications: Preferred Design for Recycling, Tolerated but Needs Improvement, Non-Recyclable, or Requires Testing. It also determines whether packaging meets the requirements of California's SB 343 labeling law.

The APR Design Guide serves as the benchmark for recyclable plastic packaging design in several US state laws, including California's SB 54 and SB 343, and forms the basis for applicable EPR fees across Canada. The tool is offered across three subscription levels to accommodate companies of different sizes.
