Variopack installs EyeC print inspection

German company adds scanner-based system for GMP-compliant label and packaging quality control.

Variopack Lohnfertigungen has installed an EyeC Proofiler 600 DT scanner-based print inspection system, automating quality control across films, folding cartons, labels, boxes and package inserts for food, pharmaceutical, cosmetics and household hygiene clients.

The system compares printed products against approved PDF references using high-resolution scanning and intelligent inspection software, detecting deviations in text, graphics, colors and codes. ISO-compliant barcode inspection and Braille relief measurement were cited as decisive factors in selecting the EyeC platform over competing German providers. Since installation, variopack has been conducting an average of 10 to 20 inspections per day on a random sampling basis.

The implementation has delivered measurable improvements across several areas. Print deviations are detected earlier, reducing the risk of rework or recalls. Manual visual inspection effort has been reduced, freeing operators to focus on technical evaluation. Approval processes have accelerated as inspections are conducted on site within shorter timeframes. All results are documented in a reproducible manner, supporting GMP compliance and regulatory traceability requirements.

'When making our selection, it was important to us that the new system not replace the technical assessment performed by our employees but rather support them in conducting a structured and traceable inspection,' said Christian Heilmann, authorized signatory for process control and IT at variopack. 'EyeC not only delivers the right technology but also provides reliable support for its implementation in day-to-day operations.'

Variopack holds IFS Food Version 8 certification at a higher level, a manufacturing license under the German Medicines Act and organic certification and employs approximately 250 people across more than 40 production rooms.
