Bähren Pharma Packaging installs its first MPS flexo press

German converter adds its first MPS EFA press to expand pharma label capabilities.

Bähren Pharma Packaging, a long-standing specialist in pharmaceutical secondary packaging based in Germany, has installed its first MPS flexographic press. The investment marks a strategic move in the company’s development of a new business segment focused on pharma and specialty labels.

Founded as a family business and now in its third generation, Bähren annually produces over 1.5 billion secondary packaging products - including package inserts, combination products and self-adhesive labels. In January 2025, the company became part of the Körber Group under Körber Pharma Packaging, strengthening its position in the pharmaceutical supply chain.

Until recently, Bähren operated exclusively with offset and digital printing technologies. With the new MPS EFA press, the company is embracing roll-fed flexographic printing for the first time. The press was delivered with an advanced configuration tailored to meet the stringent demands of pharmaceutical label production.

‘This press represents a leap forward for our production capabilities,’ said Mathias Schamberger, site manager at Bähren’s Bad Dürkheim facility. ‘It enables us to explore new product possibilities while ensuring precision, flexibility, and efficiency.’

The decision to partner with MPS was driven by the system’s overall technical value. ‘We required a highly flexible press with excellent register accuracy,’ Schamberger explained. ‘The modular rail system behind the press allows for dynamic arrangement of various units - ideal for handling complex jobs.’

Schamberger also praised the collaboration with MPS and its sales partner Printcon. ‘The team responded quickly to our requirements and tailored the machine to our needs. Their deep knowledge, especially in multilayer label production, was a major asset.’

Among the press’s key advantages are its multi-layer printing capabilities, intuitive operation, and efficient drying processes. The technology also allows for on-the-fly changes by enabling make-ready or teardown of unused print units during production.

Sustainability has long been a core value for Bähren, and this investment supports that commitment. The press features energy-saving UV-LED drying and operates on renewable electricity. It also allows for more efficient material use, minimizing waste during production.
