16 entries claim DuPont packaging awards

Labels have helped packaging claim gold and silver awards in the 26th DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation.

The silver winners included the Peanut Package entry from Clear Lam Packaging

DuPont presented 16 awards recognizing packaging excellence at the 26th DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation, chosen from nearly 200 entries from 31 countries to make 2014 the year with the second-highest number of entries and broadest reach in the program’s 26-year history.

Unilever picked up a diamond award, while the panel of independent judges selected five gold winners and 10 silver winners representing 11 countries.

Of the gold and silver award winners to feature labels, cardboard packaging from VerDeSoft, Germany claimed gold with an entry that allows home cooks to prepare fresh pasta in three minutes by squeezing dough straight out of the package into a boiling pot. The semi-fluid pasta is accessed by tearing the bottom label away from the pack and squeezing the pouch to dispense the contents.

The silver winners included the Peanut Package entry from Clear Lam Packaging, with its PrimaPak package acting as a flexible, recloseable “pop-up box” made from a single roll of flexible film and enhanced with an outer label that adds vertical strength and rigidity. Clear Lam Packaging combined all the components of the finished package onto one roll of film, eliminating the need for pre-formed bases, lids, labels and shrink-banding that goes into the assembly of rigid packaging.

Shrink-sleeve technology played a part in the success of Gatorade’s new 28oz bottle, which has been optimized to be lightweight and strong. Using roll-fed film label technology to shrink the labels onto the bottles eliminates adhesives and simulates direct printing. Form-fitting labels also eliminate water being trapped between the label and the bottle.
