Antalis offering substrate made using potato
- Microscopic spherical particles of raw starch used to create the paper’s texture

- Curious Collection offered exclusively by Antalis in the UK

Antalis has started offering Curious Matter from Arjowiggins, which is described as a “luxurious new paper with surprisingly humble roots” as it is produced using a by-product of potato waste.

Curious Matter is the result of an eight-year effort by the Arjowiggins’ research and development team to create papers with unique creative characteristics. The team used microscopic spherical particles of raw starch extracted from potato waste to create the paper’s texture, which to the touch resembles a combination of sand and silk.

Curious Matter is available in four weights – 125g, 135g, 270g and 380g – and is said to be ideal for designers with clients in lifestyle-orientated sectors where it is essential to stand out from the ordinary, from food and drink, beauty and cosmetics, to luxury goods.

It is the latest addition to Arjowiggins’ Curious Collection, which includes the Translucents, Metallics, Skin, Touch and Cosmic ranges.

It is able to be converted using a range of printing and finishing processes, and can be folded, scored, laser-cut and laminated, so is suitable for boxing and folding cartons.

Emma Linley, Antalis’ creative papers product manager, said: ‘We are very excited about the addition of Curious Matter to the Curious Collection range, which is exclusive to Antalis.

‘Curious Matter is a whole new breed of paper, which is made using innovative manufacturing processes and recycling industrial waste – it’s hard to believe that such a luxurious paper can be made by recycling this waste.’
