In honor of the converter’s eco-efforts, Newsday's GreenStreet LI and its advisory board of nonprofits has recognized US converter Overnight Labels as its ‘Green Leader of the Month’.

Don Earl, founder of Overnight Labels, began implementing environmental initiatives throughout the company in 2006.

Since then Overnight Labels has won multiple industry awards in recognition of its ongoing efforts. Some of those programs and policies include the use of water-based inks, coatings and adhesives free of VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds). It also offers label and packaging options that are 100 percent compostable and made from 30 percent post-consumer fiber. Tree free substrates made from bamboo, bagasse and cotton linters are also available.

To conserve energy, low energy usage fixtures have replaced lighting throughout the plant and to further reduce press waste, a quality management system has been put in place. And with the addition of a new computer system that delivers improved color matching accuracy, Overnight Labels has been able to decrease the excessive usage of inks.

On the recycling side, plant debris is deposited in an on-site recycling dumpster. The office utilizes refillable toner and ink cartridges for its printers and fax machines, dropping the number of units used from 120 new units to 20 refilled units per year.

Don Earl commented: ‘We are proud of our efforts and the recognition that comes along with it. As a company, we are all committed to the preservation of our environment. It is our intention to continue to implement programs and policies to further reduce our carbon footprint.’
