RR Donnelley Virginia facility recertified to VPP Star status by OSHA

RR Donnelley & Sons has had its Lynchburg, Virginia facility recertified to Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) Star status by the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA).

VPP certification is attained only after an organization undergoes a rigorous onsite evaluation conducted by a team of health and safety professionals

VPP certification recognizes organizations that have implemented effective safety and health management systems, and maintain injury and illness rates below national Bureau of Labor Statistics averages in their respective industries. VPP participants are re-evaluated every three to five years to remain in the programs. VPP participants are exempt from OSHA programmed inspections while they maintain their VPP status.

VPP certification is attained only after an organization undergoes a rigorous onsite evaluation conducted by a team of health and safety professionals. OSHA approves qualified sites to one of three levels: Star, Merit and Demonstration. Star status certification is the highest certification level granted by OSHA. RR Donnelley maintains five OSHA VPP Star status certified facilities.

Achievement of VPP certification requires employees, management and OSHA to work cooperatively and proactively to prevent fatalities, injuries and illnesses through a system focused on hazard prevention and control, worksite analysis, training, management commitment and worker involvement. Inclusion into the VPP is OSHA's official recognition of the outstanding efforts of employers and employees who have achieved exemplary occupational safety and health compliance and performance, the company said.

‘Our organization is exceedingly proud of the accomplishments of our Lynchburg employees,’ said Dan Knotts, RR Donnelley's chief operating officer. ‘Our documented safety programs serve as a foundation for a safe work place, but it is our management commitment, strong employee engagement, and the individual ownership of safety as a core value that allows our safety culture to produce such outstanding results.’

Michael Manzella, RR Donnelley's senior vice president of environmental, health, safety and quality, and its chief sustainability officer, added: ‘This recertification is the direct result of our employees' continuing commitment to operational excellence. Our employees in Lynchburg are an example of how our employees across the globe value safety as a core value of our operations.’
