Applied DNA Sciences fulfills order from international chemical company

Applied DNA Sciences, a provider of DNA-based security solutions, has shipped an order for SigNature DNA marked labels to Rhodia, an international specialty chemical company.

These labels are being utilized to protect Rhodia’s line of natural cationic polymers, marketed under its Jaguar label. A rapid screening platform allows for instant authentication of any genuine Jaguar product, insuring safety in the use of Jaguar ingredients for consumer health and well-being. All Jaguar brand products sold anywhere in the world bear the authentication tag: ‘Uniquely Jaguar’.

‘We are very pleased to introduce our SigNature DNA markers to the global chemical industry,’ commented Dr James A. Hayward, president and CEO of Applied DNA Sciences. ‘This latest order continues our successful introduction of SigNature DNA into the international marketplace and, along with the February order to our cash-in-transit customer, we believe demonstrates that APDN has the potential for significant growth. We anticipate additional orders in the markets we are targeting that deal with the consequences of counterfeiting and diversion on a regular basis.’

‘Revelations of counterfeiting and the substitution of less expensive, toxic ingredients in formulated drugs and health and beauty aids continue to be a major concern in the chemical industry and we applaud Rhodia for ensuring the safety of its supply chain, from ingredient manufacture to consumer, with SigNature DNA markers,’ Dr Hayward continued. ‘All consumers benefit when the pharmaceutical and personal care industries tighten controls on supply.’ Last year, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) estimated that the 2005 retail market for counterfeit goods exceeded $200 billion.

Demonstrating the versatility of SigNature DNA markers, the labels made for Rhodia utilize a proprietary color-changing ink which can instantly detect the presence or absence of SigNature DNA. This technology is offered in addition to the recently announced optical markers and the more definitive forensic tests available to detect SigNature DNA. SigNature DNA can be added to both the front of the label and to the adhesive on the back of labels, adding layers of protection and making them virtually impossible to copy or reengineer. This technology can be applied not only to individual labels but also to containers and large packages. The portfolio of SigNature detection methods enables companies to prevent counterfeiting and reduce product diversion; authentication is performed at any point along the supply chain.
