Mondi develops paper packaging for Prymat spices

A new ultra-high barrier paper pack keeps Polish spices fresh and recyclable.

Mondi has partnered with Polish dried seasoning manufacturer Prymat to develop paper-based packaging using its re/cycle FunctionalBarrier Paper Ultimate, replacing conventionally non-recyclable multi-layer structures.

The new packaging contains at least 80 percent high-quality paper with a functional barrier coating, confirmed recyclable according to the latest CEPI recyclability laboratory test method. It delivers an oxygen transmission rate below 0.5 cm3/m2d and water vapor transmission rate below 0.5 g/m2d, preserving the aroma and taste of Prymat's spice range. According to Mondi's product impact assessment tool, the material also delivers a significantly lower CO2 impact compared with conventional multi-layer plastic or aluminum-based packaging.

The material's stiffness provides a strong dead fold, allowing consumers to reseal the pack after first use. It is also compatible with Prymat's existing filling lines, eliminating the need for new machinery investment.

'It is essential to understand the individual needs of each customer when creating packaging,' said Adrian Goralski, managing director of Mondi Solec. 'There are often several different routes to sustainability, and at Mondi, we work closely with brands to thoroughly learn about every step of their production, distribution and end use.'

'Prymat has consistently sought to transition from multi-layer packaging to recyclable materials,' added Marta Klęka-Nowa, PR manager at Prymat. 'Thanks to our collaboration with Mondi, we were able to develop something that aligns our sustainability ambitions with the highest standards of product quality.'
