TIPA launches home compostable produce labels
New certified labels address contamination concerns in organic waste streams.

TIPA Compostable Packaging has launched certified home-compostable labels for fresh produce, developed in collaboration with Bio4Life, to help achieve zero-waste goals and meet food safety standards.
The Germany-based company, working through its European subsidiary Bio4Pack, created the labels to address a growing concern in waste management. Produce stickers rank among the top five most persistent contaminants in compost, prompting a global transition to compostable alternatives driven by market and regulatory trends.
TIPA's home compostable produce label features excellent moisture resistance while remaining flexible. Its pressure-sensitive adhesive provides strong adherence across various produce types, from smooth banana and mango skins to complex, rough orange or cantaloupe surfaces, without leaving residue.
'Labels on fresh produce have traditionally been made from conventional plastic that cannot be recycled and are often discarded in food waste bins, contaminating organic streams and contributing to microplastic pollution,' stated Daphna Nissenbaum, co-founder and CEO of TIPA. 'Policies requiring compostable labels are emerging around the world, and TIPA is leading the way with a technology that will break down with the organic matter it's attached to without compromising on performance.'
The development resulted from a partnership between TIPA and Bio4Life, a supplier of home compostable adhesives. Bio4Life's adhesive technology, BioTAK, is certified to European compost standards and leaves no residue.
The certified home compostable produce labels are compatible with conventional label printing presses and can be applied using both machine and hand application techniques. The labels are certified food-safe for direct food application and remain durable in cold and moist conditions.
TIPA also offers compostable packaging for fresh produce, allowing growers and retailers to improve packaging sustainability. The company's compostable films for labels and packaging can run on existing production lines, enabling a seamless transition for converters and brands.
