UK converter goes silent for charity

AJS Labels, a Sussex, UK-based manufacturer of self-adhesive labels, recently celebrated its second anniversary by working for a whole day in silence to raise money for a charity in southern India. From 9am to 5pm on April 8, employees worked without having telephone calls, conversations or meetings.

‘We were hoping to raise enough money to build a simple house for a homeless widow and her family’, said owner Jayne Scrimgeour. ‘I’m delighted to say that we’ve done better than that. With matched sponsorship from the company, we have raised over GBP £4500; enough to pay for three houses to help some of the very poorest families in India.’

The day was counted down by the Mayor of Littlehampton, Councilor Mrs Joyce Bowyer, who congratulated AJS on taking on such a challenge.

Managing director Andrew Scrimgeour announced the 5pm finish. ‘It’s been a tough day but the staff have been fantastic! Not a single word spoken. I’d also like to thank our customers and suppliers for their support and understanding. It’s been a huge team effort,’ he said.

The company says it is now turning its attention to the installation of its latest piece of new equipment, a Digicon Series 2 finishing machine from AB Graphic. ‘The machine has been specifically built for us to include screen unit, two flexo units, cold foil and coating options and will considerably extend our digital capabilities,’ said operations director Phil Smith.
